Final frontier

SYDNEY - Space may be the final frontier. But in this case I’m talking about space inside an airplane cabin.

What traveler hasn’t wished that economy seating could incorporate more of the space and comfort features of business and first class seats?

Well, I don’t know if we’re quite there yet, but an interesting article today holds out some promise of seating innovations to come. And to top it off, the piece includes some insight from my colleague Klaus Brauer as well.

Meantime, I’m traveling through Australia and then on to New Zealand later this week - talking about Boeing’s market outlook for the region. I’ll have more to share when I return from this part of the world.

Welcome to Australia! Our weather is not that great at the moment - it was very warm last week. I read with interest about your outlook for this part of the world - it is certainly a big market but I just hope we have more Boeing aircraft down here in the future, starting with the 787.

Perhaps benefit of the doubt is in order but after all the 787 hype and assurances only a month ago that deliveries would be on time (despite the first delay in first flight), it would be interesting to get your views on this delay. Is the multiple supplier base, in an effort to defray financial risks of new projects, proving to be too cumbersome for the initial production run?

Never been happy with the trend to stuff as many seats into as small as space as possible. I mean, just buy a longer plane. Very happy with United economy plus. You can buy more volume in the airplane for a fair price. Airlines need to offer wider seats for a fair surcharge. I think there is a huge unfilled gap between sardine class and royalty service. Personally, I'll pay for the extra space and skip the hudred dollar meal.

Take a 757-200 with 200 seats. Take a 757-300 with 200 seats. Fly the same trip. How much more for fuel? I'd be surprised if it was more than $20 per seat.
