We’ve joined the wing to the fuselage for the first 747-8 Freighter.

In the final assembly bay in Everett, our team has attached the 40-foot (12 meter) center fuselage section to the wing.


This first 747-8 is now more than 60% complete, and the entire fuselage is in final assembly.

Next step is to prepare the wing and center section for final body join, connecting these assemblies to the forward and aft fuselage sections.

As the photos show, momentum is continuing on the 747-8 Freighter as we move forward toward first flight later this year. It’s a new, high-capacity 747 offering the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter airplane, with enhanced environmental performance.

The 747-8 Freighter has 78 orders from cargo operators Cargolux, Nippon Cargo Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Atlas Air, Cathay Pacific, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Emirates SkyCargo, Guggenheim and Korean Air.

The (first) 747 has always been the benchmark as far new production aircraft are concerned. Of course, there's been delays with the -400 - because of design changes, and now the -8 - because of design changes, the 787 delays and the industrial action in 2008.

As Chris mentioned in the last post, Boeing must allow this programme to move ahead - unconstrained by this latest 787 delay. It will have to carry some of the burden the 787 was supposed to carry, such as validating the General Electric GEnx engines.

In this age of computer assisted design, we still need people that can work a pencil and their own noodle. The 777 remains the brightest light in CAD development and execution yet though - so there's hope.

We know the 747 has been a fabulously excellent aircraft in all of it's endless versions. Can't wait to see the new 747-8F roll out later this year!

Good News for the 747-8 program! I must agree with Paulo from South Africa; Boeing must not allow 787 issues to further delay the 748 program. I am confident that like the 777-300ER, the 748 will exceed performance specifications in both range and cruise speed which will result in more intercontinental and cargo orders for this fantastic aircraft!

Perhaps we will even be lucky enough to someday see an SP variant of the Intercontinental!

The first all new 747 since 1988 and the first "stretch" 747 is starting to take shape, the continued interest of the 747 shows that the worlds first wide-body jetliner is as useful today as it was when the program got started.

Randy, this is a great moment for the 747-8 Program. I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all the people working on this.

For Boeing, this is a milestone, because it shows - it can get things done. I have been critical on how the progress of the 787 and how much accountability some people needs to take. But, the 747-8 Freighter program being on track means you are still in the business of making airplanes, making them fly and making business prosper.
