Harbour Town

SYDNEY - Hello from “down under” where I’m spending a few days discussing the airplane market for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. With beautiful places like Sydney Harbour and the Opera House, it’s no wonder that more than 5 million international visitors come to Australia every year.

While Australians are great hosts, they also love to travel. In fact, they took more than 6 million international trips in 2009. With all of these people coming and going, it adds up to big business for airlines. That’s why I’m projecting 970 new aircraft will be needed in the Oceania region over the next 20 years, valued at $130 billion dollars. 69 percent of those airplanes will be single-aisle.

The Oceania region is a very strong market for Boeing aircraft and home to our customers Air New Zealand, Qantas/Jetstar, and Virgin Australia. I expect the local jet fleet will continue to grow and be renewed with Boeing airplanes.

If you haven’t paid a visit to Sydney, I highly recommend that you get down to this great harbour town. Even though it’s winter here (upper 40’s in the morning) venturing outside is a pleasure. I’m on the board of directors for the Seattle Aquarium— so I made it a point to stop by the Sydney Aquarium while I was in town. It bills itself at the top tourist attraction in Sydney and it’s easy to see why.

The market in the Oceania region is strong and is historically and currently a strong market for Boeing aircraft. With 787 sales particularly strong in the region, the future looks great.

What is that dish? It looks like a large cheese covered in breadcrumbs? I may have to serve that up on my private jet next time round!

737 Replacement

I hope there is some traction on the 737 replacement, or new engine option so that we can continue to compete effectively in this segment. While the orders at the Paris airshow were great for Airbus on the A320 NEO, many of them were sold to leasing companies and young airlines, we did not get alot of 737 orders and under threat of losing large narrow body orders at American Airlines in the near future.

It seems like the window for a decision to re-engine, or replace the 737 is going to be quicker than December, if we are remain competitive in the market place.

I think you've opened a can of worms when you say the Opera House is the most famous view of Sydney. Don't forget the Harbour Bridge.

And speaking of the bridge, think about doing a bridge climb while visiting Sydney. With the strong southerly winds blowing up from the Antarctic, it would be a chilling experience. And you get a great view of the Opera House from up there too :)

The Opera House and Aquarium reminds me of my family trip to Sydney in 2009, when DELTA started LAX-SYD service with their spanking new 772LR. That super efficient long range bird by Boeing made it possible for us to afford the trip.
